Kirkby Stephen Mountain Rescue Team (KSMRT) is a group of around 30 volunteers from a wide range of backgrounds who share a love for the Great Outdoors and wish to provide help to those in ‘trouble’ in remote locations. This is a vital service where we’re based; in rural Cumbria.
The Team is on call round the clock to deal with emergencies referred through Cumbria Police or the other emergency services. Members often leave their place of work (with employer’s whole hearted support), families or bed to respond to a call. They hope to give reassurance to those venturing out onto the fells and mountains that if they should have an accident then help will be at hand.
In our immediate area and in support of other Lakeland Teams they provide search and rescue primarily for those on the hills and fells, but also in lowland areas; often in support of other agencies, such as looking for folk lost in the community.
‘Call outs’ cover a wide variety of situations from relatively simple find and carry offs, to long and detailed incidents. During the Cumbrian floods at Christmas 2015 KSMRT were deployed to impacted areas to assist in evacuating local people and providing welfare to those whose homes had been flooded.
Keeping the Team ‘ready to respond’ is inevitably expensive. The team is funded entirely by public donation and we are proud that the money they raise throughout the year from collections at Tebay Services contributes around 40% of the amount needed to cover the basic running costs. This amazing amount could not be achieved without the generosity of you, our customers; thank you for your support.
KSMRT have recently benefited from donations from our 5p bag charge. In initiative which, since we started charging for our bags in Dec 2015, has raised £4,142 for local causes – Eden Rivers Trust, Penrith Mountain Rescue, Cumbria Community Foundation Winter Warmth Appeal.
£730 from the bag charge donated to the team has been allocated to the purchase of two personal radios. Good and reliable communications across the region are a vital resource to the work KSMRT do.
We are proud to work with groups like Kirkby Stephen Mountain Rescue Team, whose work is vital for both residents in our local community and visitors enjoying our beautiful surroundings.
