The heart of Tebay Services is arguably our farmshops. A first for the British motorway network, like the services the farmshops have grown out of the Dunning family’s passion for local produce. They were officially opened by HRH Prince of Wales in 2004.

Most of the people that stop with us are on long journeys and just passing through this magnificent landscape. We want every one of them to share our love of this place. What makes it so special, is its people - not just the staff that work here but also the network of local producers, farmers, gamekeepers and artisans that supply our farmshops.

We choose to stock products from over 70 local suppliers and as many again from the neighboring counties. Visitors are amazed by our two butchery counters, but for us, that is core to our business: it is our direct link to the family farm and with other small producers that we supply our beef and lamb to. They are struck by the choice of Farmhouse cheese and the abundance of pies, charcuterie and surprisingly large range of scotch eggs. So it is no wonder that our bread is supplied by award winning local artisan bakery More? of Staveley – apart from our services at Gloucester, we’re the only place you can buy freshly baked sourdough on the UK motorway network.

We take the same care when choosing our real ales, clothing, toys, tableware and organic wines because it’s this attention to detail that makes us who we are.

Our Butcher’s Counter

In 2007, we introduced a traditional butchery facility to the farmshop at Tebay south. This enables us to achieve full traceability with the livestock from our farm – the lamb and beef you buy anywhere in our services is from our farm. The facility includes meat maturing and cutting rooms, which supply the butchers’ counters in both our farmshops where our skilled staff are always on hand to offer advice and prepare meat to your specifications.

We take a ‘nose to tail’ approach to butchery – that is to say we use the whole carcass. As a customer you can choose from popular choices such as steak, topside and silverside through to more traditional cuts including ox tail and lamb fries plus seasonal specialities such as sweetbreads. Within the business we work with the kitchen team at Tebay and Rheged to make sure they are creating menus which use all cuts of meat to their best advantage. We supply beef to local pubs and restaurants, such as the Queens Head in Tirril, and also work with farmers from the local community by offering a ‘kill and cut’ service.
